With nearly 8,000 city employees serving over half a million residents, Kansas City’s IT team has the tall task of maintaining a secure, compliant, always-on IT environment that can scale to meet the ever-evolving needs of a flourishing city.

But it wasn’t always easy, breezy, or pretty. Previously, the city’s widespread IT team faced frustrating and unique challenges. “We were initially looking for a better patch solution because our previous one was dreadful. It was manual, unreliable, and drained resources,” said Ben Perryman, senior IT specialist in the cybersecurity division at City Hall. “We found something that didn’t just fix our patch process, it also eliminated a slew of other headaches.”

Manual Workflows Weighed IT Down

Before Kansas City switched to NinjaOne, manual and multi-tool patching workflows would consume the team’s time and energy. The vulnerability scanning and remediation process alone was multi-step, involved several scripts, and relied on a homegrown, manually updated database. The laborious process could take one full day per week. Keeping Kansas City Events Secure

“During high-profile events like the NFL’s AFC championship game or the Super Bowl parade, the city partners with the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) to set up an EOC that monitors all security camera feeds throughout the city to ensure calamitous events don’t happen.

“NinjaOne ensures that all the endpoints at the EOC are patched, monitored, and ready for the people who need to use them. Kansas City is one of eleven US cities hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Six matches, including a quarter-final, will be played in the city, bringing all the excitement of the world’s most-watched sport into America’s heartland.
